Ship Evolutions

Mods & Gear can be unlocked, upgraded and combined to make unexpected and powerful combinations: Example Build #1: Seeking Cluster Grenade Grenade + Body: Assault + High Explosive + Splinter Shot + Heat Seeking + Charged Shot This build focuses on creating as many grenade splinters as possible using the Grenade weapon and sends them tearing toward targets using the Heat Seeking mod. The overlapping blasts from the initial explosion add up to a huge amount of damage at the epicenter, while the seeking clusters handle crowd control. Example Build #2: Celestial Shield-Bomber Hullbreaker + Amp Shield + Volatile Shields + Flash Shielding + Emergency Systems + Celestial Lance This build takes advantage of the Hullbreaker’s speed and resilience to crash damage. to slam directly into enemies. The fragile Amp Shield is used not for defense, but to augment Hullbreaker’s strongest aspects, gaining increased speed and force. The shield will break on impact, but we can capitalize on that using the Volatile Shields mod, which detonates the shield when it goes down, blasting all nearby enemies. Flash Shielding gets it running again quickly while Emergency Systems grant a moment of damage immunity, making charge attacks safer. Finally, Celestial Lance is used to deal burning damage to everything around the ship at high velocities! the game’s center of attraction is its gameplay.

in its current release, you fight in a single arena with random enemies spawning in waves with the sole purpose of realizing a face-to-face confrontation between their foot and your derrière. there are several types of enemies with varying strengths and weaknesses as well as a couple of bosses that spawn at specific waves. enemies that get killed, frequently drop experience orbs. by collecting these orbs, you gain XP and eventually level up. on the first 3 level-ups, you change the weapon, shields and the ship itself from a pool of alternatives, each having specific strengths and weaknesses. after that, you can choose from various mods that can modify your weapon, shields, hull and other parts of the gameplay ranging from burn damage to friction. these mods are balanced in such a way as to not make you too OP at later waves. so, for example, a mod that increases the projectile count will also slightly decrease your fire rate in return. you’ll have to carefully mix and manage different mods to develop different strategies and thus achieve high scores. in a playthough, you can create some crazy builds, such as the following (i’ll spare the build specifics as this is just a review and not a build guide) – a ramming build where you go crazy on hull, regeneration and thrust mods and just bonk the enemies for some fun time for you and sad times for your enemies. – a shockwave build where you pick the shockwave shield that lets out a damaging and weakening shockwave when it regenerates and then modify it to reduce its cooldown.

The common description of Nova Drift as “Asteroids + Action RPG” is accurate but there’s a lot more to it than that. I’ve played a variety of “Asteroids with extras” over the years and Nova Drift is definitely my favorite. Nova Drift is much livelier than most Asteroids-style games, though not as frantic as dual-analog “arena shooters” tend to get. Many Asteroids-style games are slow and ponderous with heavy inertia but the player ship in Nova Drift feels fairly agile unless you’ve sacrificed a lot of speed (and you can usually fix that with other upgrades). Speaking of upgrades, the ship upgrades adds a lot of replayability: different weapons, different shields, different hulls, and then a variety of modifications that enhance aspects of your weapon, shield, or hull–sometimes with significant tradeoffs. -or grant entirely new abilities. Many upgrades have synergistic effects, so a big part of the game is finding combinations that work for you from the set of upgrades offered. You can reroll to get a new set of upgrades to select from, but rerolls are a finite resource so you sometimes have to take what you can get. IMPORTANT SAFETY TIP: make sure you actually read the descriptions on the upgrades! Most upgrades have some kind of tradeoff or disadvantage, the severity of which depends on your current build. An upgrade can end up being a hindrance if you aren’t careful! The game does filter out particularly deleterious combinations for you, but you still need to be aware of “negative synergies”. as much as you can. you then intentionally damage yourself, trigger shield cooldown.
