Story

For those returning to this Thai-based horror series, Home Sweet Home Episode 2 picks up pretty close to where the first game left off. You’re playing as a man named Tim, who is searching for his missing wife Jane. For refreshers sake, at the end of the previous installment, gamers were greeted with a teaser ending that had a woman, presumably Jane, cowering through tight, wooden corridors; armed with nothing but a small knife and a dim candle, as a traditional-yet-haunting Thai dance song rings through the background. Eventually, she is greeted by a not-so-friendly apparition of a beautiful dancer, who quickly attempts to take her life before the action cuts to the dreaded “To Be Continued” screen. Although this release doesn’t land us back in the role of the woman, the teaser area turned out to be highly relevant to the core of this follow-up. This time around the story has very little focus on Tim and Jane, and instead the plot shines the spotlight on Thai folklore, Buddhism, and the backgrounds of the various boss enemies. It’s important to note that Home Sweet Home Episode 2 was released in two parts; the first chunk landed at launch in September 2019, while the rest was pushed out on Halloween of the same year. The first half of the game revolves around the beautiful Thai dancer from the original game’s teaser ending, while the latter half deals with explaining just exactly where Tim and Jane have ended up.

gameplay

The core gameplay focuses on storytelling and stealth to avoid perilous spirits hunting you. Moreover, few puzzles are added into the game, making gameplay more various. While playing this game, you will be thrilled by a horror Thai atmosphere, unpredictable scary moments and challenging gameplay! When it comes to gameplay and functionality, quite a bit has changed in this entry. Even though it had some differing bosses, the crux of Home Sweet Home was a forlorn school girl that Tim had to constantly play hide and seek with; getting caught meant insta-death. Episode 2 has changed this up by giving each of the main bosses actual mechanics, and the developers completely disposed of the one-hit-kill system. Game Dev Tycoon

There’s now a health bar, medicine, and a couple of weapons that Tim will use to defend himself from lesser foes. The first boss, the beautiful Thai dancer, actually transports herself into mannequins in an attempt to catch the player off-guard, and she’s extremely successful most of the time. In fact, enough people complained about just how tough this boss is that an Easy Mode was actually introduced. Yes, it’s true, Home Sweet Home Episode 2 is not for the casual gamer; it’s actually a really tough little 5-6 hour crusade. With that said, much of the time the difficulty feels unfair, and not at the fault of the player. For instance, there are a lot of sections in the second half of the campaign that have spike traps.

Episode Two

The second episode of Home Sweet Home begins where the first left off after it’s ‘to be continued…’ screen. I’m a bit torn on that as it’s not a sequel to the original story but the second half of it as few of the loose ends were resolved and the plot leads directly into the new episode. This isn’t to say that both episodes weren’t enjoyable, just that they should have both been part of the same game instead of two separate releases. You legitimately can’t play them separately or you’ll be missing out massive parts of the story. That said, there are a few new features that make their way in, including environments, the introduction of consumables, and what seems to be a slight improvement in the game’s presentation (graphics and audio). The locations that you find yourself exploring are completely new other than a short segment where you return to your house at the start of the episode. The scenery is not only different, but you’ll run into several new monsters, one of which is the new star of the show with a disturbing backstory that you’ll spend a lot of time getting to know. The audio is particularly creepy and adds to the chilling atmosphere with ominous chanting and traditional Thai music that I’ll forever associate with horror from here on out. I could have done without the constant damage effects on screen, though, as I found myself having to repeatedly using healing items so that I could take in the excellent atmosphere without having parts of my vision obscured by smears of blood.
